Welcome to my little corner of the world wide web. I have many random thoughts, mostly I am passionate about them if they end up here, but I'm using this as a way to get my randomness out of my noggin'. Plus...it will free up my poor Facebook wall!

School of Choice

This morning, I watched my neighbor's son climb into his car...this neighbor works in my building, so I thought nothing of it when he followed me all the way to the next town where we work, until I saw him pull into a local elementary school on his way.

This saddens me! My town has a nice school district, it's a poor one, but I know they do everything they can to get them the most up to date technology (in fact, it has the best technology in the county...am I'm not just saying that because my husband is the technology director...I'm saying it because it is true!), the teachers spend a lot of money out of pocket to supply whatever they can for their students and they offer a lot of extra curricular learning activities.

So, why does my neighbor feel the need to take his kid to another school? This other district has more money than ours, but it is 20 minutes from his home. I'm guessing he doesn't know any kids in his neighborhood, and any school friends he has made live in the other district, so it involves a lot of travel time to go and see them. It doesn't make sense!

I think School of Choice is a good option if a student is having a hard time at their local school whether it be with other students or with teachers, or whatever the case may be...but why does an elementary aged student need school of choice...I think it is stuck up parents!

We all want the best for our child, but curriculm's at school's is a statewide thing. They aren't different. The school just simply qualifies for more money, because they have more students...it's how the school spends the money that will get ya.

Now all of the districts in the state have lost students due to our economy and families needing to move, mostly out of state...why hurt your local district if there is no reason to? :(

Anniversary Weekend in Frankenmuth, MI

My husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary this weekend!

We stayed local this year, and decided to travel to Frankenmuth, MI or "Little Bavaria" as it is better known :)

We stayed at the Spring Hill Suites by Marriott. It was reasonably priced at about $150 a night and is a suite, with kitchenette (well a bar sink, bar fridge and microwave) a pull out sofa, desk, king size bed and a decent size bathroom. The hotel also offered breakfast (which was horrible) and a pool/spa.

We arrived in town on Friday night and headed straight to Bronner's CHRISTmas Store (www.bronners.com) . This store is HUGE!! It's the size of 1.5 football fields I think, and has every possible Christmas item you could want! Decorations, trees, stockings, ornaments, lights, garland, nick-nacks, toys...everything! It's very festive and we love to go at least once a year to get some of the latest ornaments :)

We then had reservations at Zehnders Famous Chicken restaurant. www.Zehnders.com For $18.95 per person you get an all you can eat, family style Chicken dinner. It's Frankenmuth's famous chicken (which is good) mashed potatos, squash (or another vegetable) gravy, cranberry relish, coleslaw, cottage cheese, soup, garlic crackers/toast, and some other random breads..not to mention yummy ice cream for desert :) I had some delicious wine with dinner, Ralph enjoyed a beer and overall it was a nice night :)

Saturday offered a lot of shopping in Frankenmuth. They have so many tiny unique shops that you can literally spend all day shopping! This was our favorite area, since it looks all Bavarian and it gives a lot of options for shopping: www.frankenmuth-riverplace.com We made sure we played in the Mirror Maze a few times too :) That was a blast! We made sure to visit the Cheese Haus and tried some Chocolate Cheese! YUMMY!

Saturday night we were tired from walking all day and hungry early...so we ate at the Frankenmuth Brewery and followed that up with about an hour in the hot tub...so relaxing!

We also decided to go catch a flick in Birch Run. We saw 2012. What an amazing disaster movie! I love Disaster/End of the world movies!!! The suspense and action was amazing! I recommend this movie to everyone!!

We finished our weekend off with some Outlet Shopping at Birch Run's Prime Outlets. www.primeoutlets.com I somehow managed to walk away from a Coach wallet that matches my purse :( It was a sad day indeed! I even opted not to go into the Scrapbooking Expo! I must have been sick!

We ate lunch Sunday at a place called Tony's I-75...here are some of the reviews...one offered up by my husband : http://www.yelp.com/biz/tonys-i-75-restaurant-birch-run Ralph ate one of their BLT's - it has one whole pound of Bacon on it!!! YIKES! He ate pretty much all of it...he left some bacon, but only because he ran out of bread...he said! They also have a Banana Split made from 1/2 gallon of ice cream! I wanted it so bad, but after my 1/2 cheeseburger and my 1 lb of Onion rings...there was NO way that I was eating a banana split and walking out of there!

Overall, it was a GREAT weekend! Nothing went wrong, we didn't even fight...and that's pretty rare! The only way it could have been better is if it was in the carribean!

Grand Rapids International Wine and Food Festival 2009

My husband and I attended the Grand Rapids International Wine and Food Festival last night. We aren't Wine Connoisseurs by any means, but we know what we like when it comes to wine and we are always willing to try new things, so we thought this would be a fun opportunity and a night out!

What we didn't expect until earlier in the day was that it would cost $15 per person to get in and that got you an engraved Wine glass (a very small glass, great for sampling, but it was heavy duty) and a brochure detailing what was offered at the show. You then also had to purchase "Sampling Tickets" These tickets were suppose to help the vendors cover the costs of the samplings, so you paid $.50 per ticket. Most wine samplings cost 2 tickets and almost all food cost 2-8 tickets. I do not want to forget that it also cost $7 to park at the event.

At the door before we even entered the event, we had already spent $50 for what we expected was a couple of hours of wine drinking and food sampling. What we discovered was different:

As you enter the door you are overwhelmed with hundreds of booths of wine. They supposedly give you a list of all of the wines available and some information about them, but we had a partial list that only contained the wine names and no further information. We then thought we could get more information at the booths themselves...so we started to wander.

Each Booth had the name of the sponsor or winery and some bottles sitting on the table. Each bottle had a label in front of it listing the name of the wine and the type of wine, ie Merlot, Shiraz, Riesling and how many tickets a sampling cost. So far so good right? This is where it goes bad. The people operating the booths were Ferris State University Business School students. This again wouldn't be so bad, I understand why they are there, they are learning what it is like to sell and market a product. It's a great experience....but they do not know a thing about wine or the wine they are trying to sell, in fact one girl told us that she had been in 4 booths already that night, and the festival had only been open for 2 hours! This made asking questions about the wine out of the question! The only information you had was what was on the small index cards in front of the wine.

This is a problem! I only like white sweet wines. I mostly enjoy Riesling, but find the occasional Chardonnay enjoyable. I tried many Rieslings, most of which were too woody for my liking, which I would have known before I wasted my tickets on them had someone been able to answer my questions about the flavors of the wine. I had the same problem with the Chardonnay. Before we knew it, we were about out of tickets and hadn't found a single wine that we enjoyed...not a single one!

At this point we realized we were getting a little drunk and we needed to eat, so we saved the last of our tickets and started wandering around looking at the food booths to find something to eat.

I readily admit that I am a picky eater...but you would think that at a festival where there will be multitudes of people that like different foods, you would offer a good selection. Wrong! Every table we went to was offering some sort of seafood or beef. They all had dessert, which was great, but we wanted food!

Ralph found a beef brisket he was interested in, but discovered that it was so fatty he almost needed a garbage can because of all the gagging that went with it. I do not eat seafood and rarely eat beef (and when I do it is only the hamburger or roast variety smothered in ketchup). So, still starving, we wandered to the "market" section of the festival. Here vendors were offering cheeses, breads, olives, salsas and other appetizers. We were able to scrape up enough bread and cheese to keep us upright. Here we spent another $15 on items to take home with us.

We had had enough by this point and decided after 45 short minutes to move on. We left and realized that we were now starving and a little drunk...great now we have to drive. So we drove to Fazoli's of all places because we spent so much at the festival and enjoyed a $15 Italian wannabe dinner. Fazoli's is always good in a crunch...but it's no Olive Garden even, so that's not saying much.

So after spending $87 we managed to get a good buzz on bad wine and eat at a cheap Italian wannabe restaurant....what a disappointment!

It's a good thing I like mu husband and we generally find a way to have a good time together regardless of the situation :)

Proper Human Etiquette

Why is it that no matter where you go or what you do....it is a guarantee that someone is going to piss you off?

Example number 1 - You go out to a restaurant that you pay good money for and not only does the hostess seat you right next to the only other table in the restaurant...that table is so loud that you do not enjoy your meal at all

Example number 2 - You are out in public when suddenly some random person near you or worse yet, the person you are with is annoyed by someone cutting them off in a aisle at the store...moving to slow...moving to fast...or service just isn't where it should be and they start yelling at said annoyance/person

Now generally I do not care what people think about me or the people I am with, but I also do not want to be the center of attention and do not appreciate people judging me....the judging person could be my next boss! Why have we as a people started to ignore proper human etiquette?

Here are some basic rules to follow on a regular basis and we will all be happy!

Always remember to smile!

Be polite - Say Please and Thank You

If you are angry, feel free to voice your anger, but there is no need to yell! A simple, I don't understand or why is it not this way will suffice

If someone feels the need to cut you off in traffic - please, please do not chase them down and ride their bumper or speed up so that they can not get in. One day the cops will catch them and they will get their punishment...it is not your place to hand it to them

Do not cut people off in traffic...it's rude! I mean really are you going to get there any faster by speeding past everyone in the left lane when the left lane is ending....the right lane is at a stand still because of idiots like you racing to be in the front. If we all just take our turns, we will get where we need to go in the same amount of time. It's the constant rushing around that slows everyone down and makes us feel like we need to rush!

If in line at a cash register and another register opens up...don't race the person in front of you to it. They have obviously been in line longer than you and are just as tired and annoyed as you are...let them go first in the new line

If you are buying something at the grocery store and a price is missing or you grabbed the wrong item, just tell the cashier to nevermind. There is nothing in life that we need that badly that requires holding up a line just to get $.30 off or get that item on sale.

When speaking about someone.....if you must do it (and we all must at some point in our lives) make sure they can't hear you....it hurts

When you marry and claim you are in love....don't ignore your spouse or act like they don't matter....if they don't, then leave, it is a free country...no need for you both to be miserable. The rest of us don't want to hear the fighting or whining

When shopping or out in public with your children...please...please...please try to keep some control of them. I realize that kids don't always listen, but if they are screaming for no real reason (i.e. you're the mean mom that didn't buy them the toy that they can't live without) and they don't stop screaming after a couple of minutes...please do not continue to walk through public for 45 minutes while they scream! Please just leave with them! Yes it punishes the parent...but if you didn't spoil them so bad in the first place...or didn't try to shop during their nap time...most of the time they would not be like that!

When in the workplace DO not do the following things:
  • Scream at your significant other on the phone - cubicles are not walls and EVERYONE can hear
  • Do not Belch or Fart...again...everyone can hear and smell
  • When talking-period...do it quietly...use extra quiet inside voices, people around you can hear everything you say!
  • When picking out your lunch in the morning....don't pick out something that reeks when heated...ie...broccoli may be yummy...but it smells rotten when heated...just leave that at home
  • When using the bathroom...please do not unroll the paper-towel before you wash your hands! 98.5% of the population do it after they wash their hands...now we have to wash all over again, it's a nasty cycle
  • When walking down a hallway or an aisle...do not pick the slowest pace you can walk and then walk down the center oblivious to those around you...if you are slow...move over!
  • Tell your family to leave voicemails...or don't give them your office number...99% of the population has a cell phone now...and it is not taboo to talk on it at work if you need to. A phone ringing every 2 minutes because your husband can't get ahold of you is not appropriate and it is super annoying....

That's all I can think of for now....feel free to add your own annoyances in the comments below :)
